Carroll Shelby's exploits with Ford-powered vehicles are the stuff of legends. His introduction of the Shelby-Mustang in 1965 transformed the model from a boulevard cruiser into a true early muscle car which exhibited remarkable performance on the street and on the racetrack. The 1967 and 1968 Shelby's were easily distinguishable by their cosmetic enhancements including unique wheels and taillights. These cars were primarily intended for the street use as opposed to the more raw 1965-66 predecessors, and so the 1967-68 cars retained many of the creature comforts found in standard Mustangs. While the 1967 models came standard with the reliable 289CID V8, the big change for 1968 was the adoption of the newer 302CID unit as standard equipment.
This well-cared for and matching numbers example was originally sold by Downey Auto Center in Southern California in December, 1967. It was originally Lime Gold with the standard steel wheels., and is equipped with the desirable tilt-wheel, power steering and automatic transmission. It has only had a few owners in its life, with the majority being owned and driven by a unique aerospace engineer and publisher of Motion Magazine. He painted the car Wimbledon White and made various small modifications while driving the car on a daily basis, including adding the factory A/C. The car has a total of just over 99K miles on its odometer and retains its original Shelby owners manual.
We restored this stunning example to near-perfect original condition, adding the 10-spoke Shelby wheels and completing a complete mechanical and cosmetic update & review. We elected to retain the A/C unit and a few minor interior modifications. It is a rust-free California car that shows no sign of any damage or abuse and drives and runs extremely well.
